Embeds

Design rich Discord messages in a live preview, save them under a name, and post them to any channel, forum or thread, or update messages already in Discord, in place. Everything Discohook does in its message editor, the Embed Builder does too, and Discohook JSON, links and backup files import as they are.

#How it works

A saved message is a design of one or more Discord messages (up to 10), posted in order, stored under a name your staff choose. Each message has optional text, up to 10 embeds, link buttons, and its own posting options. Build it once, post it, and later change a line and press Update last post: readers see the edit in the original messages instead of a second announcement.

Everything in the editor maps one-to-one onto what Discord renders. The Preview panel shows the result the way Discord lays it out: your bot's name and avatar (or the profile a message posts under), markdown, #channel and @role mentions resolved to real names, timestamps in your own timezone, attached files, image galleries and buttons. Messages from the same name and avatar run together, as they do in Discord.

#Build a message

  1. In Saved messages, choose New message (or pick an existing one to edit).
  2. Give it a Name. It is required, up to 80 characters, and must be unique in the server. Only your staff see it: it labels the message in the library and in /embed post.
  3. In Messages, fill in Message 1. Add message adds another Discord message after it; each card can be collapsed, moved with โ†‘ / โ†“, Duplicated, or Removed.
  4. Press Save, or Save & post to save and send in one go.

The save bar at the bottom counts unsaved changes, and switching to another saved message warns you before dropping them.

#Text tools

Every text box has a toolbar: B, I, U, S, spoiler and code wrap the selected text; @ Role, # Channel and Emoji insert a mention or one of the server's custom emoji; Timestamp inserts a <t:โ€ฆ> time that every reader sees in their own timezone, in the format you pick (date and time, short date, relative, and so on).

#What a message can hold

PartNotes
Message textUp to 2,000 characters, with markdown, mentions and emoji.
ProfileA Name (up to 80 characters) and Avatar URL to post under instead of the bot, the way a Discohook webhook does. FiveUnity posts it through its own webhook in that channel, so the bot needs Manage Webhooks there, and so do you. A posted message keeps the profile it was sent with.
ThreadForum post title: sent to a forum or media channel, this message opens a new post with that title, and the messages after it reply inside the post. Ignored in text channels.
FlagsSuppress embeds hides link previews and every embed on the message. Suppress notifications sends it silently: mentions still show, but nobody gets a push or desktop notification.
Allowed mentionsOff: user and role mentions ping, @everyone and @here never do. On: choose who gets a notification. @everyone and @here (needs Mention Everyone where it lands, yours as well as the bot's), users (everyone mentioned, only listed ids, or nobody), and roles (every role mentioned, only the roles you pick, or none).
FilesUp to 10 files: Add files, Paste from clipboard, or drag them onto the card. Each has a Description (alt text) and a Spoiler switch. Files go out with the send but are not saved with the template, as in Discohook.
EmbedsUp to 10 per message. See below.
Link buttonsUp to 5 rows of 5 buttons. Each needs a link and a label, an emoji, or both. Interactive buttons are not part of the builder.
Message linkSet it (or press Load) to edit a message that is already in Discord. See Edit messages already in Discord.
Message nameA label only you see, on the card.

A message with nothing in it cannot be sent: it needs text, an embed, a link button or a file.

#What an embed can hold

Each embed card is split into the same sections as Discohook's: Author, Body, Fields, Images and Footer.

PartNotes
Author nameSmall line above the title. Up to 256 characters.
Author linkMakes the author name clickable. Needs an author name.
Author iconSmall round icon beside the author name. Needs an author name.
TitleUp to 256 characters. Markdown and custom emoji work.
Title linkMakes the title clickable. Needs a title.
DescriptionThe body. Up to 4,096 characters, markdown works: headings, -# subtext, lists, quotes, code blocks, spoilers, masked links and timestamps.
ColourSwatch, hex box (#5865F2), or r, g, b, plus Discord's palette. No colour removes the coloured bar.
FieldsUp to 25 per embed. Each has a Name (256), a Value (1,024, markdown), and an Inline switch, and can be moved, duplicated or removed.
ImageLarge image below the body.
GalleryAdd another image puts up to 4 images together in one embed, as Discord's image grid.
ThumbnailSmall image in the top-right corner.
Footer textUp to 2,048 characters.
Footer iconNeeds footer text.
TimestampDate and time picker with Now and Clear. Shown in the footer, in each reader's timezone.

Every image box (image, gallery, thumbnail, author and footer icons) takes a hosted https:// link, or a file attached to the message: pick it from the box's Attached file menu and Discord shows that upload inside the embed (attachment://name). A file used in an embed is not shown a second time below the text.

A few rules the builder checks as you type, and enforces when you save:

  • Up to 10 embed slots per message, and each extra gallery image takes one. Up to 6,000 characters across a message's embeds, counting titles, descriptions, author names, footer text, and field names and values. The counter on each embed card tracks it.
  • Every link box needs a full http:// or https:// URL, up to 2,048 characters.
  • Inline fields sit side by side, up to three per row; a non-inline field takes the full width.
  • An embed you add but leave completely empty is dropped when you save, so an untouched card never blocks a save.
  • A gallery needs Discord to see its images as one group, which it does through the title link. Without a title link of your own, FiveUnity uses a link to fiveunity.com.

Problems show at the top of the message card (and as a count on its header) before you save or send, worded the way the bot would refuse them.

#Post it

Choose where it goes under Post to, then press a button:

DestinationWhat happens
Text or announcement channelEach message is posted in order. Pick several channels to post the same design to all of them at once (up to 10).
Forum or media channelMessage 1 opens a new post titled with its Forum post title; the messages after it reply inside. A message with its own title opens another post.
A threadUnder Threads and webhooks, paste a thread link (right-click the thread, Copy Link) or its id. The messages go into that thread.
A webhook URLUnder Threads and webhooks, paste a Discord webhook URL, as you would in Discohook. The message is sent straight from your browser to Discord, so it works in servers the bot is not in, and files can be up to 10 MB each. The URL is never saved or sent to FiveUnity.
ButtonWhat it does
Save & postSaves the design, then posts every message to every destination. Messages with a message link are edited instead (the button reads Save & edit when every message has one).
Update last postSaves, then edits each message where this design posted it last time, in every channel it went to. A message added since then is posted after the others.
Post without savingSends what is on screen once, without adding it to the library.

After a send, the list under the buttons shows each message: where it was posted or edited, with an open link, or why it could not be sent. A send that reaches one channel but not another keeps what went out and lists the rest.

Warning

The bot needs View Channel, Send Messages (and Send Messages in Threads for threads and forum replies), Embed Links, and for files Attach Files in the target channel; a profile also needs Manage Webhooks. If any of those are missing, the dashboard names the permission and the channel before anything is sent.

Note

The builder acts with your own reach in Discord: you can only post to channels you can see, and only load or edit messages in channels you can read (for a private thread, one you are in). Pinging @everyone or @here needs your Mention Everyone, and a profile needs your Manage Webhooks.

Note

Files posted by the bot travel through the dashboard, which carries up to 3 MB per send. For larger files, add a webhook URL instead.

Deleting a saved message removes it from the library only; anything already posted in Discord stays up.

#Edit messages already in Discord

Every message card has a Message link box. Right-click a message in Discord, choose Copy Message Link, and paste it:

  • Load pulls that message's current text, embeds, link buttons, flags and profile into the card, so you can change it rather than rebuild it. Its existing files stay on the message unless you attach new ones, which replace them.
  • While the link is set, sending edits that message in place instead of posting a new one. Unlink turns it back into a new post.

FiveUnity can edit messages it posted itself, including its replies to slash commands. A message posted through a webhook (FiveUnity's own, or another one the bot can use) can be edited when you hold Manage Webhooks in that channel, the same as using that webhook in Discord, so nobody can reword a message posted under someone else's name without it. Anything else (a message a member wrote, another bot's message, a post from a followed channel) loads as a copy, which posts as a new message. Messages built with Discord's newer component layout are edited in Embed Studio instead.

Editing a FiveUnity panel (a ticket, verification or self-role message, for example) changes its text and embeds but leaves its buttons and menus exactly as they are; the send results say so.

To start from Discord instead, right-click any message, choose Apps โ†’ Open in Embed Builder, and follow the link: the message opens in the dashboard ready to edit. You need to be able to read that channel yourself.

#JSON, code and sharing

Each message card has three more tools at the bottom:

  • JSON editor shows the exact JSON Discord receives, in the same shape Discohook uses. Edit it, paste a Discohook message over it, or Download it; Apply changes checks it and brings it back into the card.
  • Code generator writes the message as discord.js, discord.py or raw JSON, for your own bot.
  • Copy JSON copies the message's JSON in one click.

At the top of the editor:

ButtonWhat it does
ImportPaste Discohook JSON (from its JSON editor or Copy Query Data), a Discohook link with ?data=, a Discord message or embed object, or a FiveUnity share link. Replace the editor, or Add as new messages. Interactive buttons and menus are left out and listed; link buttons come across.
ShareCreate share link makes a short link that lasts 1, 7 or 30 days. Anyone signed in to the dashboard can open it in a server they manage; in another server, paste it into Import. Copy data link makes a link that never expires, because the whole design rides in it. Webhook URLs are never shared.
HistoryThe builder snapshots your work every few seconds while you edit, and before Clear all, loading or importing. Restore any of them. History stays in that browser tab and is gone when you close it.
Clear allEmpties every message in the editor (History keeps the last copy).
SettingsPreview theme (Dark or Light), message display (Cozy or Compact), and whether embed sections start open. Kept in your browser.

#Backups

Saved messages moves whole libraries in and out:

  • Export on a row downloads that design as a backup file; Export all downloads every saved message in one file. The files use Discohook's backup format, so they import into Discohook as well.
  • Import backups takes a backup file exported from Discohook (discohook.org or discohook.app) or from FiveUnity. Every backup in it becomes a saved message; a name that is taken gets a number, and anything that cannot be imported is listed with the reason.

#In Discord

CommandWhat it does
/embed post template: channel: [message-id:]Posts a saved message: every message in order, to a channel, forum or thread, with its profiles, forum titles, flags and buttons. Add message-id to edit an existing message with message 1 instead.
/embed update template:Edits the messages a saved design posted last time, in place, the same as Update last post.
/embed templatesLists the server's saved messages with how many messages and embeds each holds and when it was last edited.
Open in Embed BuilderA message action, not a slash command: right-click any message โ†’ Apps โ†’ Open in Embed Builder for a link that opens it in the dashboard.
/echo message: [channel:]Sends plain text as the bot. Server owner only, and nothing in the text pings.

Posting from Discord follows the same rules as the dashboard: a design that pings @everyone needs Mention Everyone, and one that posts under a profile needs Manage Webhooks, from the person running the command.

/embed also has a personal set of saved embeds, separate from the dashboard library; each staff member only sees their own:

CommandWhat it does
/embed create channel:Opens the Custom Embed Creator modal (Embed Title, Embed Description, Embed Color, Embed Footer) and sends the result.
/embed send name: channel:Sends one of your saved embeds.
/embed listLists your saved embeds and when you saved them.
/embed get-text name:Prints the raw text of a saved embed so you can copy it.
/embed delete name:Deletes one of your saved embeds.
Save EmbedA right-click action, not a slash command: right-click any message โ†’ Apps โ†’ Save Embed to store its first embed under a name of your choosing.

/embed and the two message actions are staff tools: who can run them is set in Permissions. /echo is not on the ladder at all; only the server owner can run it, because a plain message sent by the bot is indistinguishable from one the bot sent itself. Both can be restricted to certain channels or given a cooldown in Slash commands.

#Tips

Tip

Build rules, announcements, and application briefs as saved messages rather than one-off posts. When a rule changes you edit the template and press Update last post, so the pinned messages stay the same messages and keep their jump links.

Tip

Use Duplicate on a saved message to spin up a seasonal variant without touching the original.

Tip

Moving from Discohook? Export your backups there, then Import backups here. To keep editing messages Discohook already posted, load each one with its message link: FiveUnity edits webhook messages when you have Manage Webhooks in that channel.
