Backups

A backup is a snapshot of your server's structure (every role, category and channel, with their permission overwrites) so you can rebuild it after a mistake, a raid, or a restructure that went wrong.

Note

Where: Dashboard โ†’ Backups ยท In Discord: /backup

#What is captured

SavedNot saved
Roles: name, colour, hoist, mentionable, permissions and their orderMembers, and which roles they had
Categories and channels: name, type, position, parent, topic, NSFW, slowmode, bitrate and user limitMessages, pins and threads
Every permission overwrite on every channel, including @everyoneEmojis, stickers and server settings

Roles managed by an integration (bot roles and the Nitro booster role) are skipped, because Discord recreates those itself. Threads and directory channels are skipped too: they cannot be rebuilt from a structural snapshot.

A snapshot holds up to 250 roles and 500 channels, and each server keeps up to 10 backups. When every slot is full you have to delete one before saving another; FiveUnity never quietly overwrites an older backup.

Snapshots are stored compressed. A server large enough that one snapshot would not fit is refused with a clear message rather than failing silently: if you ever hit it, the fix is fewer per-channel permission overwrites, which is the part that grows fastest.

#Save a backup

Type a Backup name (up to 80 characters: leave it blank for a dated name like Backup 2026-08-22) and press Save backup. The hint shows how many of your ten slots are used.

In Discord: /backup create name: Before the map rework. /backup list shows every backup with its eight-character id, and /backup info backup: lists exactly what one contains.

Tip

Save a backup before any big change: reorganising categories, a permissions overhaul, or a server reset.

#Restore options

These three settings apply to whichever backup you restore.

SettingWhat it does
RolesRestore roles recreates roles with their colours and permissions. Skip roles leaves your roles alone.
ChannelsRestore channels recreates categories and channels with their overwrites. Skip channels leaves them alone.
ModeKeep existing or Wipe first. See below.

You have to leave at least one of Roles and Channels on.

#Keep existing

The safe default. Anything already in the server that matches a saved role or channel (by id, or failing that by name) is left exactly as it is, and only what is missing gets created. Nothing is ever deleted. Running it twice in a row creates nothing the second time, so it is safe to repeat if a restore stalls part way.

Restoring channels while skipping roles still works: the saved overwrites are matched against the roles you have now.

#Wipe first

Every role and channel the bot can manage is deleted first, then the whole structure is recreated from the snapshot. The messages in those channels go with them and cannot be recovered.

On the dashboard this needs Discord's Administrator permission: Manage Server is not enough. In Discord, /backup load โ€ฆ wipe: true is restricted to the server owner.

Roles the bot cannot touch survive a wipe: @everyone, integration-managed roles, and any role sitting at or above the bot's own highest role.

#Restore a backup

  1. Set Restore options the way you want them.
  2. Find the backup under Saved backups. View contents expands the full role and channel list.
  3. Press Restore (or Wipe & restore) and confirm.

In Discord: /backup load backup: a1b2c3d4, with optional roles:, channels: and wipe: booleans. The command asks you to confirm with a button, only the person who ran it can press it, and the prompt times out after 30 seconds.

Delete removes a saved snapshot. Your live roles and channels are untouched.

#Last restore

After a restore the page shows a report:

  • Roles: created, kept, deleted and skipped.
  • Channels: created, kept and deleted (categories and channels counted together).
  • Up to ten warnings or errors underneath.

A warning usually means a channel was recreated without one of its saved settings (a bitrate above your current boost tier is the common one) so the channel exists but you may want to check it. Dismiss clears the report; it is only shown until you leave the page.

/backup load posts the same figures as an embed, orange instead of green when there is anything that needs attention.

#Safety notes

Warning

A backup restores structure, not content. It cannot bring back messages, thread history, who had which role, emojis, or the settings FiveUnity itself stores. Restoring after a reset gives you the server layout back, not your tickets, panels or configuration.

  • The bot needs Manage Roles to restore roles and Manage Channels to restore channels; it refuses the restore outright if either is missing.
  • Discord will not let the bot grant a permission it does not hold itself, so anything above the bot's own permissions is dropped from a restored role or overwrite. Keep the bot's role high in the list.
  • New roles are created from the bottom up so the saved order rebuilds itself, but every one of them lands below the bot's role. Expect to nudge the hierarchy afterwards.
  • Overwrites for members who have since left the server are dropped rather than failing the whole channel.
  • Restores are done one role and one channel at a time and are subject to Discord's own rate limits, so a large server takes a minute or more. Let it finish rather than starting a second restore.
  • Restoring needs an active subscription. Saving, listing and deleting backups stay available even if your plan has lapsed, so you can always take a snapshot before renewing. See Plans and billing.
